SEO, AEO, AIO, GEO, SXO and LLMO: How Business Discovery Is Changing

By Niliesh S Shirishkar9 min read

Business discovery has expanded far beyond the ten blue links. Alongside traditional search, buyers now use answer engines, AI assistants and generative surfaces. Understanding the acronyms matters less than understanding what actually drives visibility today.

    The six discovery layers

Each acronym describes a different surface or optimisation goal. They overlap heavily and share common foundations.

    • SEO — traditional organic search on Google and Bing
    • AEO — answer engine optimisation, targeting concise direct answers
    • AIO — AI-informed optimisation for AI-powered result surfaces
    • GEO — generative engine optimisation for AI answer generators
    • SXO — search experience optimisation, blending SEO with page experience
    • LLMO — large language model optimisation, focused on entity clarity and citation-readiness

    What actually drives visibility

Across all six, the same fundamentals repeat. Clear entity information about the business, original helpful content, semantic HTML, structured data, internal links, accessibility, trust signals and clean crawlability.

The businesses that appear in AI answers tend to be the same businesses that publish clear, useful, well-structured content — because AI systems trained on the open web reflect the same signals search engines have been rewarding for years.

    Common mistakes

Chasing every acronym separately. Producing shallow FAQ pages designed only for machines. Adding schema that does not match visible content. Hiding content behind interactions crawlers cannot execute. Making claims a business cannot back up.

    A practical implementation checklist

A simple starting list for most businesses:

    • One unique title and description per page
    • One clear H1 per page, logical H2/H3 structure
    • Canonical URLs
    • Semantic landmarks and accessible interactions
    • Structured data that matches visible content
    • Consistent business entity information
    • Original content that reflects real expertise
    • Descriptive internal links
    • Clean sitemap, robots and crawlability

    A note on measurement

No technique guarantees rankings or AI citations. Treat visibility as an outcome of doing many correct things consistently, not a lever any single change controls.
